Privacy & visitor analytics

We use limited server logs to protect the site and understand visit counts and visitor countries, with data minimisation and short retention.

IP address

The full IP address is retained for no more than 7 days for security and diagnostics, then removed from the visitor record and only a masked network is retained for analytics.

Approximate country

Country is derived locally on the server from the IP address. We do not determine a street address or precise location, and we do not send the visitor IP to an external geolocation API on each visit.

Analytics

Detailed analytics are retained for up to 365 days and include page, time, country and approximate source. We do not use advertising device fingerprints or third-party tracking profiles for these analytics.

Online member presence

When a member is signed in, the connection address is used transiently for local country lookup and is not stored in member presence. Live state uses a rotating HMAC pseudonym and stores neither member id nor email. Only country-level aggregate counts are retained for 7 days and then deleted automatically.

Registration and verification monitoring

For operational and security purposes, the system retains registration and verification events for up to 180 days, such as account creation, SMTP acceptance/failure and verification completion. This audit log stores no password, verification token or raw IP; attempts not linked to an account use only a masked email and HMAC identifier.

Purpose of processing

Site security and abuse prevention, troubleshooting, measuring visits and downloads, and understanding the audience’s general geographic distribution. Access to visitor-log IP data is restricted to the site administrator.

Country database

The site uses the local DB-IP Lite database for country-only lookup. Geolocation results are approximate and are not proof of a person’s physical location. IP Geolocation by DB-IP
